"Estoy viviendo un reencuentro con la gente que ha apoyado mi música y le gusta lo que hago. El público sabe que siempre me he mantenido en constante evolución", afirma Luís Enrique, en un momento donde su nuevo álbum "Ciclos" muestra la gama de sus habilidades musicales y el regreso del artista nicaragüense al género de la salsa.

"En ése álbum está mi esencia y la enseñanza que me ha aportado el género en todos estos años", agregó. El cantautor ha sido un visionario desde sus primeros días en la música. "Llegará el momento", comenta, "en que los artistas podamos hacer música por lo que sentimos, sin estar limitados por uno u otro género", reconoce el cantautor.

Desde que dejó su tierra en 1978, llevó consigo el ritmo de su tradición y su gente, que hoy siguen enriqueciendo la carrera. "Estoy regresando a la esencia de ser cantautor y músico, buscando nuevas maneras de decir las cosas, escribiendo en el pentagrama la fusión de los ritmos que nos enriquecen a todos. También cantar con lo que me di a conocer, la salsa, un género que me es afín y que me ha aportado tantas satisfacciones", relata el artista. Su nuevo disco titulado "Ciclos", bajo la producción del multiganador de Grammys Sergio George, es una muestra del deseo de Luis Enrique de lograr una obra que sume las tradiciones básicas de la salsa, pero con la sonoridad actual y todas las frecuencias que ha ido ganando el género con los años.

"El mundo ha cambiado, pero la inspiración parte de las experiencias vividas, eso es lo que uno tiene que contar, de leer un libro o de conversar. Somos una especie de cronistas de la vida", explica al asegurar que encontrar música para su repertorio nunca le es difícil, desde buscar armonías hasta contar historias. Incluso su aporte a la salsa fue desde esta concepción. "Llegué al género cuando comprendí que se podía hacer música para bailar, sin sacrificar un buen mensaje", cuenta, reconociendo que fue Rubén Blades el artista que le mostró el camino.

Desde su infancia en Managua, rodeado de una familia donde la música era primordial, su interés por innovar y crear estaba latente. Entusiasmado en desarrollarse, se instala en Estados Unidos desde el año 1978, mudándose a la ciudad de Los Ángeles. Inspirado por la música del jazz y el rithm and blues americano, fue agregando nuevos sonidos a sus composiciones. "Mi norte es seguir mi intuición, siempre he requerido de ella para mis decisiones", reconoce.

Y así es como dejó que la vida se encargara de mostrarle los pasos a seguir y todos los caminos lo llevaron a la salsa. Se presenta en la ciudad de Miami en una audición para ser la voz líder de un grupo salsero y el demo que grabó esa tarde en que descubre su conexión con la música tropical, se convierte en su primera producción discográfica en Estados Unidos: "Amor de medianoche", editado en 1987 por Sony Discos.

De allí, lo demás, es historia conocida por millones de personas que a través de Iberoamérica han admirado su arte. Su imagen, alejada de los estereotipos de la salsa, se ganó la atención de nuevas audiencias, enriqueciendo el género y ganándose el título de "El príncipe de la salsa". "Otro de los momentos que fueron importantes de mi carrera fue la llegada a Puerto Rico", rememora. Fue en 1988 cuando la Isla del Encanto se convierte en su segunda patria. En esta generosa tierra graba la segunda producción titulada "Amor y alegría", con éxitos inmediatos como "Desesperado", "Tú no le amas, le temes" y "Compréndelo". "Muchas personas en América Latina piensan que soy puertorriqueño", dice con orgullo.

Desde aquí, la carrera de Luís Enrique gana solidez y sus nuevos discos se convirtieron en números uno en ventas: "Mi mundo", "Luces del alma", "Una historia diferente", "Luis Enrique Live" -grabado en vivo en el Universal Amphitheater de Los Angeles-, "Dilema" y "Luis Enrique", además de una docena de producciones grabadas en Costa Rica, Venezuela, México y Nicaragua.

Su talento también brilló en producciones de otras estrellas como "Abriendo Puertas", el disco de Gloria Estefan, donde interpretó instrumentos de percusión del clásico "Mi tierra". "De hecho, en ese tema, el primer sencillo y gran hit de ése disco, tuve el placer de realizar la introducción con las tumbadoras".

Por otra parte, también trabajó como instrumentista en la canción "María" interpretada por Ricky Martin, y en producciones discográficas para Chayanne, Arturo Sandoval, Alex Acuña y Collective Soul, entre otros. Más allá de los constantes reconocimientos del público, representados en los varios discos de oro y platino que ha recibido a lo largo de su carrera, ha sumado cuatro nominaciones para los premios Grammy americanos, cinco premios "Lo Nuestro", dos premios Ronda en Venezuela, así como los reconocimientos de los premios Huaco de Panamá, TV y Novelas de México y Colombia, premios Aplausos, los reconocidos ACE y ASCAP en Estados Unidos.

Su popularidad le permitió, además, llegar a la actuación, estelarizando la novela "Al son del amor". En medio del éxito conseguido por este rol, graba "Génesis", una producción que lo acerca al género pop, trascendiendo las barreras que impone el haber sido consecuente con un estilo y finalizando su relación con Sony Discos. Con Polygram Latino como nueva casa de discos, dos años más tarde, lanza "Timbalaye", dejando ver la madurez conseguida por el paso del tiempo, tanto como compositor, intérprete y productor, y permitiendo que la influencia afrocaribeña que había recibido se volcara en sus composiciones.

Con el nuevo milenio y luego de cinco años, graba otra vez salsa de una manera innovadora, fresca, con un ritmo que le es propio y estrenando su propia disquera: Chazz Music, distribuida por WEA Latina. Así, el artista se compromete en su totalidad con sus álbumes: nace "Evolución" (2000) y luego "Transparente" (2002), cumpliendo roles de productor, autor, arreglista, músico e intérprete y valiéndose del reconocimiento de sus pares en la música.

Más tarde, "Dentro y Fuera" (2006), "una forma de recordar que más allá de cómo se defina alguien o a algo, al final, uno siempre termina dentro de uno mismo, haciendo una comunión interna", explicó. En el 2009 vuelve a reinventarse, poniendo toda su pasión en una nueva producción bajo el sello Top Stop Music que refleja su verdadero ser. "El disco es rico porque sus textos hablan de mí, de mi gente, de mis amigos, de mi entorno", define. "Yo no sé mañana", compuesto por Jorge Luis Piloto y Jorge Villamizar (ex vocalista del grupo Bacilos), es su primer sencillo, y viene a ser una buena muestra del espíritu del disco. Lo acompañan otras tantas composiciones de la autoría del mismo Luis Enrique, Carlos Varela, Amaury Gutiérrez y Fernando Osorio, entre otros.

El cantautor ofreció un concierto privado recientemente en la ciudad de Miami, con todo el cancionero de "Ciclos", el cual se editara en DVD para distribuirse junto al álbum.Igualmente, hace poco, el salsero fue elegido por ESPN para interpretar el tema oficial del Clásico Mundial de Béisbol transmitido por esta importante cadena y así representar el sentimiento del fanático latino por este deporte.El cantante nicaragüense dice sentirse honrado por éste y los últimos acontecimientos que han ocurrido en su carrera, en la que dice haber dado un paso adelante con el feliz regreso que marca este nuevo disco que resume toda su experiencia. Con este lanzamiento vuelve a brindar su talento en geniales composiciones que lleven, más que buen ritmo, un mensaje inscrito y, sobretodo, afianza su bien ganada distinción en el ruedo que lo reconoce como "El príncipe de la salsa".

Luis Enrique "Ciclos" "I´m experiencing a reunion of sorts with the people that have supported my music and like what I do. The public knows that I have kept myself in a constant state of evolution," affirms Luís Enrique, as he brings forth his new album, "Ciclos" which demonstrates the full gamut of his musical abilities, and marks the Nicaraguan artist?s return to the Salsa genre.

"This album carries my essence and the teachings that this genre has brought me throughout all these years," he added. Since his early days in music, the singer-songwriter has been a visionary. "There will come a time," he comments, "when we as artists will be able to make music based on what we feel, without being limited to one genre or another," he says.  Ever since he left his country, in 1978, he took the rhythm of his tradition and his people with him, and still to this day; they continue to enrich his career.

"I?m returning to the essence of being a singer-songwriter and a musician, looking for new ways to say what one feels and writing into the stave the fusion of various rhythms that can be created, and are enriching for all. Also, I?m singing in a genre that I became known for, Salsa, one that I identify with and that has brought me great satisfaction," says the artist.His new album, "Ciclos," produced by the multi-GRAMMY award-winning Sergio George, clearly shows how much Luis Enrique wants to achieve a work that conglomerates some of Salsa?s most basic traditions with the current sounds and frequencies that the genre has gained over the years.   "The World has changed, but the inspiration comes from the experiences we live through, that?s the story you have to tell, to read about in a book or talk about.

We are all some type of life chronicler," he explains, assuring that it is never difficult for him to find music for his repertoire -from finding harmonies to telling stories. Even his contribution to Salsa came out of this concept. "I came to the genre and understood what could be done with music you could dance to, without having to sacrifice a good message," he says, recognizing that Ruben Blades was the artist that showed him the way.

Ever since his childhood in Managua, surrounded by a family where music was essential, his interest for innovating and creating was latent. Enthused to develop himself, he relocated to the US since 1978, moving to the city Los Angeles. Inspired by Jazz and Rhythm and Blues, he began to add new sounds to his compositions. "My North is to follow my intuition, I have always counted on it to make my decisions," he recognizes.This is how he allowed his own life to take its own course and show him what steps to take. All the roads led to Salsa.

He showed up to an audition in Miami for the lead vocal in a Salsa group and the demo he recorded that afternoon, on which he discovered his connection with Tropical music, became his first album in the United States: "Amor de Medianoche," was released by Sony Discos in 1987.From that moment on, the rest is history, known to the millions of people throughout Latin America that admire his art.

His image, far from Salsa stereotypes got the attention of a new audience, enriched the genre and earned him the nickname "The Prince of Salsa." "Anther important moment in my life was my arrival in Puerto Rico," he recalls.In 1988 Puerto Rico becomes his second home, a generous land which served as the backdrop for recording his second album, "Amor y Alegría," which included instant hits like "Desesperado," "Tú No Le Amas, Le Temes," and "Compréndelo." "Many people in Latin America think that I am Puerto Rican," he says proudly.

From this point forward, Luis Enrique?s career begins to solidify and his subsequent albums went on to become number ones in sales. They were "Mi Mundo," "Luces del Alma," "Una Historia Diferente," "Luis Enrique Live" -recorded live at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles-, "Dilema," and "Luis Enrique," in addition to a dozen other albums recorded in Costa Rica, Venezuela, Mexico and Nicaragua.

His talent also shone through on albums by other stars such as Gloria Estefan?s "Mi Tierra" where he played percussion instruments on the classic album title track. "As a matter of fact, I had the pleasure of playing the introduction with the congas on that track, which was the first single and greatest hit from that album." Additionally, he also worked as an instrumentalist on the song "María" by Ricky Martin, and on albums for Chayanne, Arturo Sandoval, Alex Acuña and Collective Soul, among others.

Beyond having the public?s constant recognition, epitomized by the various Gold and Platinum albums he has received along the course of his career, he has piled up four GRAMMY nominations, five "Lo Nuestro" awards, two Ronda awards in Venezuela, as well as also winning at the Huaco awards in Panama, TV y Novelas in México and the Aplausos awards in Colombia, plus the renowned ACE and ASCAP awards in the United States. His popularity also allowed him to segue into acting, as he starred in the soap opera "Al Son del Amor." Right as he is enjoying the success of this role, he recorded "Génesis," an album that brings him into the Pop genre, and breaching the set limitations to be consistent with a style; thereby ending his relationship with Sony Discos.

Two years later after he moved to his new label, Polygram Latino, he released "Timbalaye," which showed the maturity he gathered over time, as composer, interpreter and producer, and also allowed for the Afro Caribbean influences he had received to overflow into his compositions.Five years later, with the arrival of the new millennium, he recorded Salsa again in a fresh, innovative, way, creating a rhythm that was his own and becoming the first release of his own label: Chazz Music, distributed by WEA Latina.

As a result, the artist became totally immersed with his albums: first, "Evolución" (2000) was born and later "Transparente" (2002), where he held roles as producer, author, arranger, musician and in turn, earned the recognition of his peers in the industry. He later released "Dentro y Fuera" in 2006.

"It?s a reminder that beyond how one defines someone or something, in the end, one ends up making an internal communion within," he explained.He reinvents himself once again in 2009, pouring all his passion into a new production that reflects his true self, under the Top Stop Music label.

"The album is very rich because the lyrics are about me, my people, my friends, my environment," he comments."Yo No Sé Mañana," composed by Jorge Luis Piloto and Jorge Villamizar (ex vocalist for the band Bacilos), is the first single and a good sample of the album?s spirit. It comes accompanied by a number of other compositions authored by Luis Enrique himself, Carlos Varela, Amaury Gutiérrez and Fernando Osorio, among others.

The singer-songwriter recently gave a private concert in Miami, performing the entire "Ciclos" track listing, which will be edited into a DVD for distribution along with the album.Recently, Luis Enrique was chosen by ESPN to interpret the official song of the World Baseball Classic, broadcast on this network, in order to represent the sentiment of Latin fans for the sport.The Nicaraguan singer says he feels honored by this and other recent events in his career, which now takes another step forward with the return that this new album celebrates.

Luis Enrique offers his talent in this new release through ingenious compositions that not only have great rhythm but also carry a message, and above all, reaffirm his well-deserved title as "The Prince of Salsa."March, 2009.
